After formal education in Canine Behavior and Training, Breanna's career evolved in the greater Boston area, teaching group classes, managing Day School programs, and mentoring apprentice trainers. Maybe the cue isn’t clear, or we changed something without realizing it. Or maybe we asked for something too quickly — dogs don’t generalize information the way we do. ? Overwhelmed

A fun weekend for my youngest dog. Stevie closed out her Barn Hunt Open title with a first place run that landed her a High in Class as well. We moved up to the Senior class and had two first place runs in Senior with one of those runs being a High in Class run. She also gave crazy 8s a try and accumulated 140 points towards her Crazy 8s title by finding 5 rats in under 2 minute each run. This was Stevie’s first time ever searching for more than 2 rats in a run which she handled amazingly well.

For my entire career, I’ve seen and heard the phrase “starve them out.” It’s a casual way of saying: withhold food (for days) long enough to create such intense hunger that even a dog with low food drive will appear food-driven. It’s an unethical and lazy way to create the illusion of food drive. But hunger and food drive are two different things. ⸻ So, what is the difference between hunger and food drive? Hunger is a biological need. It occurs when the body requires energy or nutrients. It’s regulated by hormones like ghrelin and leptin, as well as signals from the brain. Hunger is temporary and is relieved by eating enough food. Food drive is a motivational trait—a dog’s willingness to work in order to get food. It’s shaped by instinct, training, breed traits, and experience—not just hunger. Dogs with high food drive will still work for treats even if they’re full. Some dogs naturally have high food drive. Others naturally have low food drive. ⸻ So, what can you do to build food drive ethically and in a way that yields lasting results? 1.Add excitement to your delivery of food. Throw a party when you hand over that reward. 2. Stop viewing food as just something you give your dog. Start treating it like a toy. Have them chase the food in your hand or throw it for them to run after. 3. Step up your reward value—ditch the kibble and biscuits. Switch to freeze-dried treats or fresh foods like boiled chicken or hot dogs. Dogs are individuals; take the time to find what your dog enjoys. 4.Minimize stress during training sessions. Stress and confusion will lower a dog’s food drive. 5. Have them “work” for their meals, but keep the work easy and achievable. This can include using food puzzle toys. 6. Train before feeding meals. If a dog has low food drive, train first and then provide their daily meal. 7. Keep sessions short—the goal of any training session is to leave your dog wanting more. 8. I couldn’t let national black dog day go by without sharing some love for black dogs. If you know my dogs and I you can probably guess that I am particularly fond of black dogs. Have you heard of Black Dog Syndrome before? Just like black cats, black dogs are less likely to be adopted which is why this day was created.

I met Omen back in November of 2024. He had been adopted by his wonderful mom in August of that year. Sadly, Omen came from what turned out to be a very neglectful rescue. When his mom picked him up, he was covered in pressure sores, had severe colitis, hookworms, and such badly infected ears that they had developed hematomas. Omen hadn’t just been neglected physically—he had spent the entire first year of his life at that rescue and lacked any socialization to the outside world. His mom did everything right when she brought him home. She focused on his physical health first, and once he was in a better state, she reached out about training. Since Omen had already had about two months to decompress while healing, we were able to jump right into training. I was honest with his mom—only time would tell how much of what we were seeing was genetic versus a lack of experience. We started from the ground up. We taught him how to use his body, how to play, and we laid a solid training foundation before we even considered making a plan to leave the property. Fast forward to today, and Omen has had so many major wins. The dog who once struggled to walk down the little dirt road he lives on now goes to busy farmers markets, hikes mountains, and tackles new places and challenges with his tail held high. Slow and steady won the race. I’m forever thankful to all my clients for trusting me to guide you and your dogs. I don’t think anything could have prepared me for the day Fritz was diagnosed with lumbosacral disease and spondylosis. Those three words felt like a sack of bricks had been dropped on my chest because I knew it meant our way of life was about to dramatically change. For seven years, Fritz and I did everything together. We traveled across more than half the country, hiked hundreds of miles, paddled for hours on the paddleboard, biked, trained, and competed in a variety of sports. And with just three words from the doctor, I knew we’d never get to do most of those things again. Though Fritz had spent much of his life being included in my daily activities, he did know how to stay home, and his previous training made for a smooth transition to a new way of life. I found new ways to fulfill him and meet his energy needs. The training he had received since puppyhood prepared him for all the new vet appointments and the handling required for his treatments. His previous training made physical therapy easy. I’ll never stop longing for the days that once were, but I find some level of comfort in knowing how much we did while we could and how so much of what we had done prepared him for this new way of life.

Swimming did not come naturally to Stevie. The first time she ventured into the water, she forgot she had back legs, causing her head to submerge, which led to a panicked response. Compounding this, that summer New Hampshire experienced a high number of toxic blue-green algae blooms. As someone who is extremely cautious with my dogs, finding safe swim spots became very difficult. Stevie entered the next summer carrying negative feelings about swimming. While she enjoyed the water, any moment she couldn’t touch the bottom would send her into a frantic state. I could have accepted her hesitations and left her discomfort unchallenged, but doing so would limit her experiences. If Stevie couldn’t swim confidently, activities like paddleboarding and boating would remain out of reach. She’d be stuck on the shoreline while her dog friends swam. Challenging our dogs to confront their fears can be equally challenging for us. Witnessing them under any level of stress is difficult; however, it’s crucial to distinguish between manageable stress that they can overcome and inducing stress without purpose. They are a great way to supplement the training you are already doing with your dog and provide a safe and fun way for them to burn off some mid day energy. Yesterday, my good friend and I took our young and active dogs for a hike, something we do regularly. This was a short and easy hike, only 3 miles long with a 300 ft elevation gain—the type of hike where you don’t really worry about anything going wrong, and you question whether you really need to bring your hiking pack. After almost 2.5 miles of fun, my friend’s dog laid down in the middle of the trail and didn’t want to get up. He was unsteady when we tried to lift him, his gums quickly turned white, and his eyes lost all energy. After a minute of assessing him, we decided to carry him out so we could get him to the closest emergency vet as soon as possible. Carrying a 65 lb dog up a rocky incline is difficult, to say the least, and neither of us had a rescue harness with us. We both feel incredibly fortunate to have been on an easy trail and nearing the end when this happened. I can only imagine how much worse this situation could have been if we had been on a more difficult trail or had not been close to the end. Porkchop is home resting now. Tests at the emergency vet indicate that he was likely bitten by a bug, causing anaphylaxis. Hiking with my dogs is one of my favorite ways to spend our free time, and I know they love it just as much. This situation won’t stop us from hiking, but it sure did humble me. Moving forward, regardless of the difficulty or length of a hike, I’ll be carrying a rescue harness for my dogs. If you hike with your dogs, I urge you to add a rescue harness to your pack. 8 weeks ➡️ 10 months What did I do? I allowed her to eat undisturbed, occasionally dropping a treat and walking away to prevent any potential food-related conflict. When my puppies are between 2 to 5 months old my goal is one thing; set them up for success. So how does a schedule of 1 hour in the crate then 1 hour out of the crate set them up for success? ? 1. Helps to teach them to nap when they are tired. Puppies need a lot of sleep, on average puppies need 18 to 20 hours of sleep a day for healthy growth and development. Many puppies will push themselves to stay awake due to stimulus around them. When we put our puppy in the crate we minimize the chances of them fighting to stay awake. 2. Avoiding the struggle of an over tired puppy. What many people perceive as energetic is often times an over tired puppy. Think toddler that missed their nap and is screaming how they are not tired. Though Fritz lives peacefully with my other dogs he isn’t dog social. He is a dog that genetics has created an intolerant of other dogs in his personal space. But fritz being intolerant of other dogs has never stopped him from having fun. We just have fun playing together rather than him playing with other dogs. We still go out and live life together, just not at the dog park ? I’ve had countless people tell me how lucky my dogs are to have me due to my willingness to “go above and beyond” for their physical health. When I tell people that Fritz uses a tens unit daily to manage the pain from his spondylosis, they are happy to hear that we have this treatment at our fingertips. On the contrary, e collars are often looked at by many as an inhumane tool or a lazy way to train a dog. I love social media for the access to so much information right at my fingertips and the ability to stay connected with friends and make new connections. Seeing past clients living their best life with their dogs is amazing. However it also exposures you to a world of human opinions often being presented as facts. In the world of dog-related social media, there is a tendency for some to jump to making extreme statements and harshly judge others for their training methods or participation in certain dog sports. Instead of expressing disagreement, comments often resort to accusations of abuse. But here’s the reality: true abuse of animals is a serious issue, and using such extreme language to criticize training methods or sport participation just because you wouldn’t use that method or participate in that sport only serves to diminish the gravity of actual abuse. Horrific animal abuse happens every day and that needs to be stopped but it is rarely at the hands of those who care enough about their dogs to participate in sports or invest heavily into their training. With the restrictions on XL Bullies in the UK in place as of January 1st I’ve seen a lot of videos of owners struggling to get their dogs comfortable with wearing a muzzle. Muzzle conditioning is not a quick process. You can find many videos online of how to properly condition your dog to wearing a muzzle comfortably but step one is always making sure your muzzle is fitting the dog comfortably. If you don’t have the resources to order a custom-made muzzle for your dog, there are a few things you can do to help a standard sized muzzle fit more comfortably. Baskerville style muzzles are one of the most cost effective and easily accessible muzzles on the market. They come in a very narrow shape which can cause discomfort on dogs with a wider shaped muzzle due to the constant rubbing. Over time you will even start to notice hair loss and potentially sores where the muzzle is sitting too snug. Finding housing has become increasingly more difficult over the past few years. Finding housing when you own a dog, especially a restricted breed or multiple dogs can feel almost impossible. Get used to hearing no because it’s going to be a bumpy ride if you are looking for dog friendly housing but here are a few things you can do to increase your odds of hearing yes. 1. Make your dog a resume: Their name, age and breed with a photo. List their favorite activities. Highlight the training you have done with them. Include your dog being up to date on vet care. 2. This means that no matter how perfectly a dog is raised, if their genetic makeup predisposes them to certain traits or tendencies, it could overshadow any positive influences from their upbringing and vice versa. So, why is this saying harmful? ? Firstly, it implies that any dog with a less-than-ideal upbringing will inevitably be untrustworthy. This kind of blanket statement unfairly stigmatizes dogs like my own dog, Mr. Cheeks, who had anything but an ideal start in life. But if one day all my clients stopped paying me then yes I’d probably not be so quick to answer emails, texts and calls. One example of this is when reaching into the crate to remove a leash, which can be a lot of pressure to put on a dog that doesn’t trust you yet. However, going in and out of the crate can’t be avoided. That is where this leash setup comes into play. What may be surprising to you though is roughly 75% of dogs that come for training lack real enthusiasm for food rewards. They may be willing to take the food when there is nothing better to do but the second there is something more interesting the food is of no interest to them. So how do we make food more interesting? We add energy to it! Make the food not only yummy but fun. My first go to methods for this: 1. Toss the food in the air for the dog to catch. 2. Throw the food so it rolls across the floor prompting the dog to chase it. 3. Tease them a little with the food before delivering it to them.

It’s when we start to show the dogs the commands they have learned in different environments, with distractions added in and my personal favorite in different states of mind. Well because walking five dogs down three flights of stairs during the winter in Rhode Island just for them to potty wasn’t really fun for me. It would have been awesome on those cold winter days to just open a door and let them outside real quick to use the bathroom. My dogs never suffered from not having a yard, they got to burn off energy and be fulfilled. They lived life to the fullest. We went to parks for them to run, we walked a lot, we hiked, we went to every pet friendly store, we went to dinner and ate on the patio. We have a yard now, a really big grassy yard that’s fully fenced. Preventing resource guarding between housemate dogs is a key part of creating a harmonious life together. But how do you prevent resource guarding between housemates? “We made them share a bowl at first so one of them didn’t think they possessed the bowl” or “we feed them right next to each other so they know not to compete over the food” are things you’ll hear from friends and family. Though that advice may be well meaning and it may have work for their dogs I can assure you it worked for their dogs not because of those methods but despite of those methods. Why did it work for those dogs? Well simply because those particular dogs do not have a strong genetic desire to guard their food. You couldn’t make those dogs guard their food bowl even if you tried, if you could you would have by doing using those methods. As a professional dog trainer I don’t gamble with dogs. My job is to set dogs up to be successful in life, so when food inevitably falls on the ground it doesn’t end up being the moment one dog has finally had enough of the constant competition that revolves around food. Instead it’s a moment in time that one dog ended up with a extra tasty snack accidentally and we move on with our day. So what do I do to prevent resource guarding between housemates? I prevent them from feeling like their resources are under a constant threat. Not only are you preventing your puppy from becoming overly dependent on your other dogs to function in the world you are able to dedicate all your attention to your puppy which is setting you all up for success. I’m not saying you can never take your puppy out with your other dogs but I tell clients to do a 70/30 ratio. 70% solo, 30% with your other dogs.
